Distillation

Displaying contempt towards those he characterizes as “intellectual”, in the excerpt, the narrator makes use of diction, a condescending point of view, and exaggerated personification to display his animosity towards the “gentlefolks” that he writes about. Through the use of words such as “nasty” “miserable” and “spoil”, the narrator patronizes scholarly people, in addition to calling their work useless. The author plan on writing this passage is to convey the message that people who do work intellectually are despicable, and that it is more honorable to work for money with labor. This passage displays the narrators ill-feelings towards “gentlefolks” and may shadow some conflicts that have happened in the past.
